Internships — Positions available for 2008.

SUMMARY: The Internship Program at the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness is designed to provide students and recent graduates with work experience with a non-profit conservation organization in all areas of its operations, including policy, communication, volunteer engagement, membership, development and administration. Opportunities are usually available in each of these areas, for an intern with a specific interest.

The mission of the Friends is to “protect, preserve and restore the wilderness character of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Quetico-Superior Ecosystem through public advocacy, ecosystem preservation, scientific understanding, user education and enhanced public appreciation.”

SALARY: Unpaid

DEADLINE: 4/15/08

PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS:

• Reports to a director of the organization, depending on areas of interest

• Works and coordinates with all staff as a member of a small team of professionals. S/he will be fully integrated into the office and will serve as an informed, active member of our staff

• May work with members of the Board of Directors or Advisory Directors and its committees depending on assignment

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are examples of the types of responsibilities that an intern’s work may include depending on the applicants skills, experience and interests:

Policy

• Research and write, articles, letters, reports and/or fact sheets on issues that impact the Boundary Waters Wilderness

• Assist in drafting and submitting public comments on proposed timber sales or other natural resource projects

• Assist in lobbying activities and monitoring policy making at the state capitol and in federal agencies

• Assist in implementing elements of the Friends various conservation campaign and efforts

Communication and Engagement

• Assist in the development and implementation of environmental education curriculum

• Help monitor the expanding, decentralizing communications web for significant messages regarding Friends, its programs and its interests, analyzing trends and preparing organization responses as appropriate

• Assist in the planning of events such as education- and engagement-focused programs and events for members, potential members, volunteers, conservation decision-makers, coalition partners, educators and the community at large

• Assist with the development of proposals to potential funders for outreach and education programs

Membership

• Assist in upgrading/updating member database

• Assist with the development of new membership recruitment

• Analyze trends in member giving

• Assist with collaborative projects with the Communications/Engagement Director

• Develop a filing system for major donors, foundations, corporations

QUALIFICATIONS

• High-energy, creative, and detail-oriented team player who is able to work independently.

• Superior oral and written communications skills.

• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to listen well.

• Self-starter. Strong initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision.

• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks successfully.

• Computer literate.

• Affinity for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• 2 – 4, 12 week summer intern positions available. (Internships during fall, winter, and spring for varying durations are available, contact staff for more information.)

• Weekly hours can be flexible. Minimum of 20 to maximum of 40 hours/week.

• Willing to work with colleges/universities for school credit.

• Positions will be filled by the first week of May.

Booth/Exhibits — Answer questions, distribute Friends' information at environmental fairs and public events.

Office Help — Data entry on computer (PC), filing, mailings.

Photography — If you’ve taken good black and white, or color pictures in the Quetico-Superior, we would like to use them in our newsletter and other publications.

Fundraising — We can use help approaching companies and individuals who may be willing to support the Friends.

Membership — Spread the word about the Friends! I would like brochures to distribute to friends and co-workers or put out at a church or business.
