Dear Friends:
With your support and renewed membership we have the opportunity to achieve real progress for the protection of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Quetico-Superior ecosystem the canoe country we all love so deeply.
We have a wonderful opportunity, probably more so than any time since the BWCAW legislation was enacted, to build bridges to the local communities surrounding the wilderness, to make friends and create allies.
We have the opportunity to work with the U.S. Forest Service, the Trust for Public Lands and other environmental organizations on forest stewardship projects and to develop collaborative ways to protect sensitive areas bordering the wilderness.
We have the opportunity to influence the policies and decisions that impact the wilderness and broader Quetico-Superior ecosystem and to be a strong advocate for the wilderness as we have successfully done throughout our history.
The threats to the wilderness unfortunately remain significant and ongoing. For example, there are numerous proposals for mining operations south and to the west of the wilderness that could increase air and water pollution; there are State DNR and U.S. Forest Service logging proposals on the edge of the wilderness and in current roadless areas; there are regular enforcement problems with illegal motoring in the wilderness; there is the growing damage to the forest eco-system due to exotic invasive species.
The list of problems and risks goes on, but the good news is that we have the opportunity, working together with our partners, our friends and all of the other stakeholders to preserve and protect the treasure that is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It is an opportunity we are ready to seize. And with your help and support, we will make progress.
By continuing to support the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, you will be an active participant in efforts to protect and preserve the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We count on you and our 4,000 other members and donors to work with us to make the difference.
Please send in your tax-deductible membership contribution to Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness today.
We look forward to working with you in 2007 and beyond!
Warm regards,
Ron Meador
Executive Director
