Agencies critical of PolyMet proposalOctober 19, 2009An article in the Oct. 18 Duluth News Tribune newspaper covered the imminent release of the PolyMet Draft Environmental Impact Statement (which is expected to be available on the DNR’s website this week; the public comment period begins Nov. 2). The article reports on several of the comments from government agencies and Native American tribal entities that question the document’s completeness and accuracy. The Environmental Protection Agency expressed several concerns about the project’s environmental impacts:
The EPA also stated its belief that the document was incomplete because it failed to address financial assurance, which would prevent taxpayers from getting stuck paying for mine clean-up if PolyMet someday goes bankrupt, as has been the case many times in the past with these types of mining companies:
Three bands of Minnesota’s Ojibwe, with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commision, pointed out that the environmental impacts of the mine could last for thousands of years:
The Friends will carefully analyze the PolyMet DEIS when it is released. The organization will submit substantive science-based comments to the DNR and Army Corps of Engineers expressing any concerns about this mine’s potential impact on the clean waters of northeastern Minnesota and any other relevant issues regarding the proposal.

I have read most of your material, and would URGE an additional supporting statement. What is Polymet’s recent track record? I have a friend, a mine magmger, in Ontario’s mining business, and he assures me they are reputable, etc. ARE THEY? What are the results of POLYMET operations? Should be vital info.
Thanks.
PolyMet has never operated a mine before. The NorthMet project is their only project. They are a junior mining company. Hence there is no track record, good or bad, to rely on.
