In 1879, Minnesota State Geologist Newton Horace Winchell surveyed the Arrowhead region of Minnesota. Once on the north shore of Lake Superior, he portaged from Grand Marais to what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. His route followed the historic Iron Trail, to the Voyager Route and then descended back to Lake Superior via an Ojibwe canoe route on the Poplar River.

Please join professional landscape photographer Bryan Hansel for this Lunch with Friends as he speaks about how he recreated Winchell’s route using a combination of existing infrastructure and bushwhacks. The solo canoe trip took Hansel approximately two weeks. It was 160 miles and included about 30 miles of portages.
