Summary
If you really want to get away from it all, this trip is for you. Taking you into the central, most isolated regions of the park, this challenging route brings you through large lakes that are renowned as some of the best fishing waters in canoe country, and through small, intimate lakes with phenomenal camping. A great way to experience solitude and the magnificent isolation of the wilderness.

Overview
From Prairie Portage paddle to the North Portage in Sunday Bay which will bring you to Sunday Lake. Look for a nice campsite on the southern shore near the eastern end of the lake, this makes a good spot to stay on your first night. A couple of back-to-back long portages will wear you out, but don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time rest those legs on the long paddle across Agnes Lake. Wind can be an issue … if windbound, take the afternoon off and either plan to paddle in the evening or wake up before dawn to paddle this long body of water. After exiting Agnes, be sure to look for the pictographs on Keewatin Lake on route to Kawnipi Lake — where you’ll find great lake trout fishing.

You’ll do a 180 and continue south though Keefer then Kahshahpiwi. These are long, narrow lakes that stand in contrast to the broad body of water you will have paddled a few days before. After Point Lake and Nest Lake you’ll be back on the massive Basswood Lake, but don’t worry, large islands will provide shelter from the wind. From North Bay paddle onto Burke Lake and to Bayley Bay and back to Prairie Portage. If you choose, you may also choose to do this route counter clockwise.
