The Powwow skirts 15 lakes, which is reason enough to hike it. However, the trail has been punished by natural disasters. Th e two-hit combination of the 1999 blow down, followed by the 2007 Pagami Creek wildfire, virtually erased this historic trail from the wilderness. In the last couple of years, volunteers have put in hundreds of hours in a heroic effort to reopen the trail, which was completed at the end of 2019. Though the trail is now open, this is a challenging hike, for all the reasons other wilderness trails in the BWCA are challenging, but more so. Though hikers are rewarded by the views of the many lakes on this trail, large parts look a little too much like Mordor.

Awesome Trail. Name could use an update
The PowWow Trail is my favorite trail in Northern Minnesota. It’s rugged, beautiful, offers a large variety of experiences, and sees very little traffic. However, I can’t help feeling like the name is outdated and could use a more educated and equitable update. Surely there is an Anishinaabe name in the region that would make more sense, or a biological name that is neutral and doesn’t get used inappropriately, like PowWow tends to?
