The three lakes on this route are very shallow and can be covered in weeds during much of the year. However, the relative lack of visitors makes for a pleasant getaway and change of pace.
Detailed Route Info
Head south across Big Lake and paddle up into the Portage River, and then on to Lapond Lake. The short portage to Lapond varies in length depending upon water levels, but should be fairly easy. If you want to avoid paddling the Portage River you can take a rarely-used 160 rod portage up out of Big Lake directly over to Lapond. Further up the Portage River is an easy 37-rod portage onto Big Rice Lake.
