There are a lot of lakes in Minnesota, but not a lot of mountains. This routes puts the state’s “mountains,” along with bluffs, cliffs, long lakes and stunning overlooks, on full display. The overlook above Rose Lake is one of the most iconic in the entire BWCA, and leads to one of the longest portages – the 610-rod “Baby Grand Portage,” which is fortunately flat, clear and easy to travel. After this carry, you’ll arrive at a series of small lakes hemmed in by stunning mountains. This is truly awe inspiring county. Once you portage onto Clearwater Lake, don’t forget to turn around. It’s silly gorgeous.

Baby Grand Update
I have heard from two Highly Reliable people that the beavers love the Baby Grand, and moved in, set up shop and built a pond that flows over the portage between Rose Lake and the Daniels Lake spur trail. Expect to be wet…possibly paddling…this portage is no longer the long, flat walk-in-the-park it once was.
