Climate change, wildfires, and the future of the BWCA

Lunch with the Friends
Climate change, wildfires, and the future of the BWCA
Friday, August 21 at 12 PM, Central Time
Virtual/Zoom webinar
Governor Walz’s executive order this week was a historic win against copper-sulfide mining — but mining isn’t the only threat facing the Boundary Waters. From this summer’s wildfires to changes in the forest to the spread of invasive species, climate change is reshaping the wilderness before our eyes.
Join us for our next Lunch with Friends: Climate change, wildfires, and the future of the BWCA with special guest Dr. Bill Rom.
Bill grew up in Ely above his family’s outfitting shop and guided wilderness canoe trips before devoting his medical career to environmental health. A Global Distinguished Professor of Environmental Health at the NYU School of Global Health, he’ll break down the science of climate change, its environmental and human-health impacts, and what it all means for the BWCA and northeast Minnesota.
We begin at 12:00 noon Central on Friday, August 21st. If you’re in Ely, join us in person at 8 E. Sheridan Street — we’ll be broadcasting live and taking questions in the room. For everyone who lived through this summer’s fires, this is one you won’t want to miss.
